Take a moment to reflect on what your workplace looks like and how it operates. Maybe it thrives on collaboration, independent work, or a mix of the two. Perhaps there are opportunities for public speaking such as presentations or company events.
No matter the case, workplaces differ from each other, but however they appear and function, they require soft skills. We propose that companies should ensure their employees have these necessary skills in 2024 by directly implementing training opportunities. Now that’s a New Year’s resolution with a practical solution (more about implementation later).
If you are not quite convinced, according to Babbel, a language learning platform, soft skill development can “enhance company culture and accelerate business success.” Babbel outlines five useful soft skills (some of which we have been frequently discussing): creativity, communication, adaptability, time management, and critical thinking.
Take creativity, for example. Babbel explains this particular soft skill can be helpful for not only designers and marketers, but everyone within an organization, such as developers, IT staff, managers, and beyond.
“The ability to think creatively means that unexpected challenges or hurdles can be overcome quickly, with minimal disruption, and, often, with exciting and dynamic results,” Babbel writes. “It builds a culture of resilience and forgiveness and ultimately accelerates a department beyond its expected parameters.”
This demonstrates how soft skills can be just as tied to innovation, productivity and success as technical skills.
Though soft skills are undoubtedly important, you may be wondering why this conversation is particularly relevant in the 2024 context. There has been discussion over the past few years about shifting priorities leading to the modern workplace. This has been more prevalent ever since the pandemic and the rise of virtual work. In 2024, people are working in virtual, in-person, or even hybrid work arrangements, creating space for us to redefine workplace dynamics.
Another part of this modern workplace is about empowering employees. Microsoft details this very directly from a technological perspective. It writes “The nature of work has changed. Employees expect to work securely from anywhere, on any device, and they put a high premium on work that enriches and fulfills them. When their productivity tools enhance the quality and effectiveness of their work experience, they’re happier, more valuable, and more likely to stay.”
This “modern workplace,” as described by Microsoft, explains that work is more than just showing up and using technical skills. It emphasizes the importance of fulfillment, productivity, happiness, and employee retention; aspects that are directly linked to soft skill development, but also concerns amid many organizations.
For instance, LinkedIn’s 2023 Workplace Learning Report detailed that “93% of organizations are concerned about employee retention.” According to the same report, one of the best ways to tackle this issue is by providing more learning opportunities.
